Fes, Morocco, Medina Should Be At The Top of Your List

Outside Fes Medina

Walking through Fes Medina is like being transported back to the medieval era. The medina here is the largest and oldest not only in Morocco but in North Africa too. In fact, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical importance.

Be wary that the streets are narrow and often look similar, so it’s quite likely you’ll get lost. However, there will be plenty of locals about to ask for directions if you get stuck.

Full of vibrant colours and smells, the medina is full of stalls creating intricate designs on fabrics and brass and delicious cuisine.

The medina is found in Fes Old Town and is one of the best-preserved historic towns in the region of the world. Because of its age, vehicles aren’t permitted in the area, but you’ll certainly need to watch out for donkeys parading through the streets, selling various products such as jewellery and decorated pottery.

If you truly want to be immersed in the culture of Fes Medina, then there are plenty of hotels to pick from within Fes Old Town so it can all be on your doorstep.

You could quite easily spend a whole day wandering through Fes Medina, enjoying the samples and stopping at the rooftop cafes for a spot of coffee and people-watching, breathing in all Morocco has to offer.

After spending some time in the beautiful, yet concrete jungle of Fes Medina, it’s not surprising if you want a bit of nature. That's where Jnan Sbil Gardens comes in, one of the few green spaces in the city.

A spectacle of the wildlife on offer, water features line your path around the grounds along with vibrant trees and plants and birds dancing around the trees.

The Jnan Sbil Gardens are perfect for a gentle stroll outside of the powerful sun or a place to relax with a book underneath a palm tree.

Investigate Fes City, Morocco, Tanneries

A huge part of the culture in Fes are the tanneries, a huge open area littered with sunken pits. These pits are filled with various dyes used to dye animal skills and owners are more than happy for tourists to get involved too.

Be warned, there is quite a strong smell associated with the area but that should deter you from getting involved. Be prepared with some smelling salts, mints or even a scarf before heading over.

Amazing Architecture

Dotted throughout the city and within Fes Medina are buildings dating back to the medieval era.

One of which is Africa’s oldest university, now the second-largest mosque in the country. Though non-muslims aren’t permitted entry, the outside is awe-inspiring and well worth a visit.

By peaking through the gates, get a glimpse of the marble structure, detailed carvings and even water features in the courtyard of the mosque.

Another piece of architectural significance is the Bou Inania Madrasa, a religious building that’s one of Fes, Morocco’s attractions found in the medina.

Inside Bou Inania Madrasa

Built in the 14th Century, the Bou Inania Madrasa was formerly a school and is now joined to a mosque. A spectacle of architecture, carvings, marble sculptings and flashes of green tile mosaics are inside the courtyard.

Two of the most interesting buildings in the city, they are definitely worth a visit.
